TYPES OF MEMBERS of the EDUCATION COMMITTEE

There are four types of members: ex-officio, Chairperson, Elected Members and Solicited Members.

1. Ex-officio members

There are 7 ex-officio members, namely:

  • ISCoS President
  • ISCoS President Elect
  • ISCoS Hon. Secretary
  • ISCoS Hon. Treasurer
  • ISCoS Scientific Committee chair
  • Spinal Cord editor
  • Education Committee past chair

Roles: Ex-officio members are primarily on the Education Committee to ensure coordination across ISCoS and consistency when there is a change of members and Chairperson. They are not expected to drive and initiate educational activities (unless they chose).

2. Chairperson

Eligibility: The Chairperson must have been a member of the Education Committee for at least 3 years prior to nomination.

Length of term: Each term will be 3 years. There will be the option for the Chairperson to remain in his/her position for two terms (6 years) but only by invitation from the President of ISCoS. Upon completion of his/her term, he/she will be invited to become a member of the Advisory Committee.

Appointment: The Chairperson will be appointed by theISCoS President every three years.

Starting date of appointment: The Chairperson will commence duties as Chairperson of the Education Committee Meetings on appointment.

Role: The Chairperson will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the Education Committee. He/she will delegate roles and responsibilities to members and will ensure the ISCoS President and ISCoS Executive are aware of any relevant initiatives or decisions.

Other duties: The Chairperson will be an ex-officio member of the Education Committee of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) unless ASIA or ISCoS request a cessation of this arrangement. The Chairperson will be a member of the ISCoS council.

Early retirement: If the Chairperson retires before his/her 3 years has elapsed, the President of ISCoS may appoint an acting Chairperson until the next ISCoS Annual General Meeting (AGM). If the acting Chairperson becomes the Chairperson then he/she may remain Chairperson for 6 years from the time of official appointment at the ISCoS AGM (according to the above rules).

3.      Elected Members

There will be between 5 and 10 Elected Members of the Education Committee (total number is at the discretion of the Chairperson of the Education Committee).

Eligibility: Any Full or Associate Member of ISCoS is eligible to be an Elected Member of the Education Committee provided he/she:

  • is currently involved in providing educational activities at a local or regional level
  • is committed to driving educational initiatives for ISCoS
  • can attend at least two Annual General Meetings (AGM) in three years, except in exceptional circumstances as agreed by the Chairperson.

Length of term: Each term will be 3 years. There will be the option of doing two terms (6 years) but Elected Members must reapply after three years.

Appointment: Elected Members shall be voted in by all members of ISCoS at the ISCoS AGM.

Starting date of appointment: New Elected Members of the Education Committee will commence their appointments after ratification at the ISCoS AGM. However, they will be invited to attend the Education Committee Meeting held at the time of the ISCoS AGM but will not be eligible to vote until their appointment is confirmed at the AGM.

Call for members: There will be a public call for Elected Members to fill any vacant positions or positions becoming vacant on the Education Committee each year. The call will be made six months prior to the ISCoS AGM. Applications will close three months prior to the ISCoS AGM. The call for Elected Members will be advertised through the ISCoS website, newsletter and regional societies.

Selection criteria: Elected Members will be selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment and experience in the prioritized areas of the Education Committee. ISCoS reserves the right to restrict seats on the Education Committee to Elected Members who represent particular types of ISCoS members or specific regions.  ISCoS may also from time to time restrict seats on the Education Committee to people with specific skills required by the Education Committee to function effectively.

Application for membership: Potential Elected Members must submit a curriculum vitae and covering letter. Applications will be accepted at any time during the year but will only be assessed prior to the ISCoS Scientific Meeting.  Applicants may be invited to be a Co-Opted member (see below) or a member of the Advisory Panel until their application is voted upon at the next AGM.

Application for second terms: Existing Elected Members of the Education Committee who wish to reapply for membership after each three-year term must submit a written application outlining their past contribution and how they plan to contribute over the next three years.

4.      Solicited Members

There will be between 5 and 10 Solicited Members of the Education Committee (total number is at the discretion of the Chairperson of the Education Committee).

Eligibility: Any Full or Associate Member of ISCoS is eligible to be a Solicited Member of the Education Committee provided he/she:

  • is currently involved in providing educational activities at a local or regional level
  • is committed to driving educational initiatives for ISCoS
  • can attend at least two Annual General Meetings (AGM) in three years, except in exceptional circumstances as agreed by the Chairperson.

Length of term: Each term will be 3 years. There will be the option of doing two terms (6 years) but a Solicited Member must reapply after three years. Some Solicited Members will be eligible to remain on the Education Committee indefinitely if they are extremely active and central to the function and purpose of the Education Committee. They will however need to reapply every three years and their application will need to be approved by the Chairperson of the Education Committee in consultation with members of the Education Committee

Appointment: Solicited Members shall be appointed by the Chairperson of the Education Committee in consultation with members of the Education Committee.

Starting date of appointment: New Solicited Members of the Education Committee will commence their appointments after ratification from the Chairperson of the Education Committee. They will be eligible to vote from this time.

Selection criteria: Solicited Members will be selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment and experience in the prioritized areas of the Education Committee. The Chairperson of the Education Committee reserves the right to select applicants in a way which ensures good representation of all its members and regions. The Chairperson of the Education Committee may also from time to time select applicants in response to specific skills required by the Education Committee to function effectively.

Application for membership: Potential Solicited Members will be invited by the Chairperson of the Education Committee to submit a curriculum vitae and covering letter. Applications will be accepted at any time during the year.

Application for second terms: Existing Solicited Members of the Education Committee who wish to reapply for membership after each three-year term must submit a written application outlining their past contribution and how they plan to contribute over the next three years.

VOTING within the EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Only Ex-officio, Elected Members and Solicited Members of the Education Committee may vote. Voting may occur at the Education Committee Meeting held at the ASM or periodically through email. Only a majority from those who chose to vote will be required. In the case of a tie, the Chairperson may cast the deciding vote.

THE ADVISORY PANEL of the EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Past members of the Education Committee of ISCoS will be invited to join the Advisory Panel. The Advisory Panel will be called upon to provide advice, and contribute as they wish to ISCoS Educational Activities. They may attend the Education Committee Meeting held at the ASM but will not have voting rights.

CO-OPTED MEMBERS

Members of the Education Committee may co-opt other members of ISCoS or non-members of ISCoS to work on initiatives and special projects coordinated by the Education Committee. They will not attend the the Education Committee Meeting held at the ASM unless requested by the Chair to give advice and anwer questions on a particular issue. They will not have voting rights. They will be encouraged to apply for membership to the Education Committee as vacancies arise (provided they meet the eligibility criterion). Any work done by ISCoS members as co-opted members of the Education Committee will be highly regarded if members subsequently wish to apply for membership to the Education Committee.
