World SCI Day 2025
Message From The Chair of ISCoS Prevention Committee on SCI Day 2025Spinal Cord Injury Day (SCI Day) is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by individuals living with spinal cord injury and a good opportunity to emphasize our commitment to prevention. Since 2016, the International Spinal Cord Association (ISCoS) has decided to observe SCI Day every year on 5 September. Each year, it is celebrated under different slogans and themes that highlight the most current issues affecting people with spinal cord injuries. On SCI Day 2025, as Chair of the ISCoS Prevention Committee, I am pleased to address this year's slogan, "Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection." We come together under this important theme to raise awareness and take action against one of the leading causes of spinal cord injuries worldwide. Falls, whether at home, in the workplace, or in public spaces, remain a significant yet preventable risk factor for SCI. Falls can happen to anyone, at any age, and in any setting. However, with the right knowledge, tools, and interventions, we can significantly reduce their occurrence and impact. For those living with SCI, preventing secondary injuries caused by falls is equally critical to maintaining independence and well-being. As the ISCoS Prevention Committee, we are committed to promoting evidence-based strategies, fostering collaboration, and empowering individuals to take proactive steps in fall prevention. Together, we can make a difference. By preventing falls, we not only protect spinal cords but also preserve dreams, aspirations, and the ability to live life to its fullest. Let us unite in our efforts to create a world where spinal cord injuries caused by falls are a rarity, not a reality. This year, let us focus on: Education and awareness: Spreading knowledge about the risks of falls and how to reduce them through public campaigns, community programmes, and educational resources. Safe environments: Advocating for safer design of homes, workplaces, and public spaces to reduce the risk of falls. Empowerment: Providing people with SCI and their carers with the tools and training to prevent falls and manage risks effectively. Research and innovation: Supporting advances in technology, rehabilitation, and prevention to protect spinal cord health. On behalf of the ISCoS Prevention Committee, I urge you to join us in this mission. Share the message, take action, and inspire others to prioritize prevention. Together, we can build a safer, more inclusive future for all.
