At the Council Meeting of the International Medical Society of Paraplegia held on 15th March 1975, the then President, Sir Ludwig Guttmann discussed a letter he had received from Mr J Cosbie Ross suggesting that an Annual Medal be presented to the
member of the Society who had given outstanding services in the field of Paraplegia. The Council agreed to this proposal and put the suggestion to the Annual General Meeting.
At the Annual General Meeting on 25th July 1975 the President asked Mr Cosbie Ross to express the views on the proposal of an annual Medal. Mr Cosbie Ross had felt for some time that the Society should follow the example of other scientific bodies
and give an Annual Medal for outstanding services, e.g. The St Peter’s Medal given by the British Association of Urological Surgeons. If the annual Scientific Meeting agreed to such a presentation, then the Annual Medal should be presented at
the Annual Dinner. It was suggested that for the first five years the recipient should be chosen by the Council, thereafter a Select Committee should be empowered to select the recipient. It was also suggested that the Council should be empowered
to give more than one medal in the year or to withhold a medal if no suitable recipient was nominated.
Eligibility & Process
The Medal is awarded to someone “who has made an outstanding contribution to the prevention or treatment of spinal cord injury or to a person involved in research advancing the knowledge in the field that can lead to future treatment of spinal
cord injury”.
Each year, the Executive Committee will call, within a specified time frame, for nominations from the membership to be made online on the appropriate form that can be found in the member’s area on the ISCoS web site.
For a person to be eligible, at least two nominations are needed.
A nominated member should have had a 15-year continuous membership.
Non ISCoS members who fit the criteria can be nominated.
Executive Officers or Chair of Committees cannot be nominated while in office.
The Executive Committee members will recommend a short list to the Board for approval.
The Executive Committee and six previous holders of the Medal will make the final selection.
In exceptional circumstances, a second medal could be awarded in any one year.
The Medal will be presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting in person or by Zoom.
The winner will be invited to give the ISCoS lecture at the next ASM.
